Our Story

Sapphire Farms began in 2020 with a dream of a beautiful Lavender field on our 10-acre property. The first attempt at procuring new Lavender ended with the supplier ignoring my calls and then never sending the 600+ plants I had ordered. (And refusing to refund my money). Spring 2020 was upon us, too late to order more, Covid was raging, and I had an empty patch waiting for something! I decided to grow Sunflowers. I planted over 1000 branching sunflowers with six different varieties. I didn’t have a clue as what to do with them, but they were in the ground. In the late summer, early fall I decided to make bouquets in mason jars with pretty sunflower ribbon and sell them in front of the local grocery store. Half of the money made I donated to the local volunteer fire department. In a time of difficulty due to the pandemic the pretty little bouquets brought a little sunshine to our community. They sold out quickly with shoppers asking for more. I harvested three more times with help from family and friends.

In 2021, I found a new supplier, Victor’s Lavender in Sequim, Washington. He has been very helpful, and the Lavender came in early spring. I only ordered 144 plants this time because I wasn’t quite ready to go “all in”. And I wasn’t ready to stop growing Sunflowers. The little 2-inch plants flourished and produced beautiful fragrant buds. I incorporated them into the sunflower bouquets and also made dried bunches. In the late summer, early fall I was back in front of the local supermarket selling pretty little sunflower/lavender bouquets. And again, donated half to the local volunteer fire department.

It all begins with a dream.

It gets messy and hard and there is always dirt under the fingernails. But…the earth sings a sweet song and the bees hear it.

Fast forward to spring 2022. I planted 130 more little 2-inch lavender plants and approximately 400 Sunflower seeds. (Can’t seem to give up the Sunnies yet!) I worked on making a Lavender oil and created a wonderful lavender lip balm. I had my first ever fall subscription group! They got a new flower bouquet every week for five weeks. I had a free U-pick session at the end of the season (which by the way was SOOOO fun!). During the winter of 2022-23 I made lavender sachets. P

2023 season was so fun! Several varieties of cut flowers, LOTS of sunflowers and of course the lavender. Th winter of 23 took ~100 Grosso lavender plants. This winter was a little less extreme and it looks like the remaining plants are waking up! Several hundred new plants on the way from VICTOR’S LAVENDER in Sequim, Washington. No Grosso… All Folgate which are hardier.

In joy or sadness flowers are our constant friend.
